Originally called Gilbert Field, the Winter Haven Municipal Airport is owned and operated by the City of Winter Haven and provides a full-range of corporate/business and general aviation services to the surrounding community. The Airport’s mission is to serve the City of Winter Haven and the surrounding area with full aviation services by attracting corporate, business and recreational flight activities. The Airport fulfills this mission by maintaining current facilities, offering a full range of aviation services and providing economic benefits for the surrounding community. Aviation services include flight training, aircraft fueling, maintenance, rental and sales. Other amenities include courtesy vehicle and meeting rooms. The Airport is comprised of approximately 440 acres of land.

The City started construction July 11, 2007, on a new 13,000-square-foot terminal building. The new facility will consist of space for the Fixed Base Operator (FBO), which will include a service counter, retail area, private office and storage room. Merchandise available in the retail area will include pilot supplies, navigational charts and books. The Flight Planning/Weather room will accommodate three computer terminals: a weather terminal with DTN weather system connected to a satellite feed; a terminal for the Automated Weather Observation System, which shows information broadcast to the pilots by radio from the airfield weather center and a terminal with internet service. The pilots' lounge will be a private area to accommodate up to 10 people. The flight school will include a reception area, private office, open office and a classroom for the ground school. There will also be an administration area, conference room, restaurant, retail space and vending area.

The Airport has 13 T-Hangars, one pole hangar, 21 executive hangars, seven corporate hangars, 42 tie-downs, one office building and the terminal building. Most of the T-Hangars have 10 bays. There are approximately 200 based aircraft at Winter Haven Municipal Airport.
