About Community Services:

In the simplest of terms, the Community Services Department is responsible for providing core day-to-day municipal services to Winter Haven residents and visitors. This includes streets and traffic; commercial and residential garbage collection; parks and recreation; libraries; cultural arts; protection and preservation of the Chain of Lakes and other environmentally-sensitive areas; stormwater management and cemeteries.

The department's primary goal is to provide exceptional services in the most efficient and effective manner. Collectively, the Community Services team is responsible for:

• 70 miles of paved roads and alleyways

• 40 miles of sidewalks

• 402 traffic signals

• 4,500 street signs

• 11,115 solid waste customers

• 158 acres of cemeteries

• 494 acres of park and recreation land

• Five recreation centers

• Two swimming pools

• One 18-hole golf course

• More than 80,000 Library materials and 211,905 registered Library borrowers

• 50 lakes with more than 5,000 acres of surface area

• 2.5 miles of public lakeshore

• About 1,200 storm inlets and 250 storm drain discharges

• 15 stormwater treatment ponds

• One of only a few municipal programs in the state for environmental and lakefront lands acquisition program

Department administration offices are at City Hall, 451 Third St. NW, and include the Community Services Director and the Administrative Services Manager. The remainder of the department is broken down into four primary divisions - Natural Resources, Leisure Services, Library Services and Public Services.
