Community Improvement Award, 2004 First Quarter Winner,
Brad Downton of 521 7th Street, NE.

Brad Dowton began his home improvement project ten years ago, when he removed the concrete covering 90% of the front yard and replaced 12 inches of top soil with two dump truckloads of new soil. Brad then added a new and smaller driveway. The planting of more than 300 low maintenance shrubs and five trees followed. Some of the structural improvements he made included: installation of a new roof, low emittance (E) windows, insulated exterior doors, an air-condition unit, privacy fence, micro drip irrigation and outdoor solar lighting. The cost of this entire project is estimated at $15,000.

Community Improvement Award, 2004 Second Quarter Winners,
Faye and Jeremiah Foster of 1375-10th Street, NE.

Faye and Jeremiah Foster began this project five years ago by resoding their yard and planting approximately 300 flowing plants, 12 trees and 1,000 African caladiums. Improvements to their house include: repainting exterior and interior walls; replacing the air-condition system and roof; installing low (E) energy windows; stenciling the driveway; replacing all appliances; and installing new floor tile (imported from Spain) throughout the interior of the house. The above photographs illustrate the numerous flowerbeds that contain between 5 to 12 different plant species per bed. The Fosters’ estimate they have spent $20,000 thus far.

Glenn and Sheila Koch began this project five years ago by removing and replacing the ineffectual brush with more than 200 plants and trees---many of the replacement trees are fruit bearing---such as plum, peach, and orange tree, in addition, changing the steep slope of the yard, painting the house and privacy wall, irrigation, and outdoor lighting were added and the yard was sodded three times, by Glenn "just to get the right look."

Glenn has purchased the vacant lot across the street and has begun landscaping sections of this area in keeping with the theme of his property with annuals and fruit bearing plants, e.g., pineapple plants to assist the aesthetics of the neighborhood.
