Essential Job Functions

Perform general maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of automotive vehicles and heavy equipment. Our fleet consist of automobiles, light, medium, and heavy trucks, construction and industrial equipment, utility and solid waste servicing vehicles, emergency vehicles and other miscellaneous pieces of equipment, including water crafts. This position performs skilled and semi-skilled repairs and maintenance on City vehicles and equipment. Work includes responsibly completing scheduled preventive maintenance services, automotive and equipment repair, tire repair and replacement, and related duties. Work is performed under direct supervision and is reviewed through inspection of completed work.  Performs preventative maintenance at scheduled intervals on a variety of equipment.  Physically removes all sizes of tires, makes necessary repairs or replacements, and reinstalls on automotive or heavy equipment. Diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle components and systems prior to ordering parts and performing repairs. Maintains accurate records and reports related to the maintenance and repair of equipment.  Completes written work orders on job assignments listing actual work performed, repair codes, time required, parts and shop supplies. Verifies and records current meter reading.  Operates and test drives equipment to verify that it is functioning properly.  Performs service and repairs on non‑automotive gasoline and diesel engines and equipment such as mowers, pumps, generators, etc.  May assist a skilled Mechanic II or Mechanic III with major repairs on various automotive and heavy equipment.  May be required to operate a fuel delivery truck according to an established schedule on an as needed basis. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive listing of essential job functions; the performance of other essential functions may be required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools utilized in the maintenance and repair of
    automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the hazards involved in performing the foregoing specific requirements and the safety precautions to be taken.
  • Ability to lift heavy metal parts and components; operate test and service equipment and perform
    diagnostic work; complete written logs of repairs and maintenance conducted; and follow oral and
    written instructions.
  • Dexterity and coordination sufficient to balance and guide heavy items such as truck tires, rims, and large hydraulic components.
  • Skill in the proper use and care of hand and power tools and equipment; and operating a motor vehicle and a variety of equipment and machinery to ensure it is functioning properly.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Two (2) years of experience in general automotive repair and maintenance or related field and/or enrollment in, or completion of, vocational automotive classes.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience that is determined to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirements may be substituted.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license and a good driving record, as determined by the City of Winter Haven. Must acquire a Class B CDL driver’s license with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements within 90 days after employment.
  • Possession of a tool cabinet and own hand tools suitable for use on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Absence of non prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified through a screening process administered by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.

Physical / Environmental Factors:

  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform assigned work throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces; to bend, stoop, twist, and stand for long periods of time; and the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • This work involves risk of exposure to fumes, chemicals, refuse odors and debris and adverse weather conditions.
