Celebrating Freedom, Unity, Tradition, and Legacy: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park Rededication and Rockin’ Freedom Fest
The City of Winter Haven is hosting two significant, back-to-back events on Saturday, July 2 at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on Lake Silver.
In recent years, the City has added a skate park, a trail, and renovated the amphitheater to this park. Most recently, a new Dr. King memorial has been added along with a new building with an observation deck, concession stand and restrooms. The goal of all these updates was to modernize the park and reactivate it for continued traditions and future generations.
This dual event will be the City’s first major event at the park since renovations wrapped last month. The staff is excited to welcome residents to the space, take time to dedicate and honor the history of the park, and celebrate the Fourth of July holiday together.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park Rededication
A rededication ceremony will be held starting at 5:00. The ceremony will remember the history of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, reflect on continuing to carry out Dr. King’s legacy of unity in a public place, and recognize the community members who contributed to the park’s recent renovations.
The City will provide a tent for shade and host City Commissioners, community leaders, and anyone who wishes to attend. Speakers will present their perspectives, and the ceremony will conclude with a ribbon cutting in front of the new monument and park sign.
2022 Rockin’ Freedom Fest
Following the rededication ceremony, the City’s annual Rockin’ Freedom Fest will kick off. Attendees are welcome to sit in the amphitheater or bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the food and festivities.
This year’s event features live music from event headliners the Bay Kings Band starting at 6:00. Food Trucks will be on site serving food. The Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team will perform a ski show at approximately 7:00. This year’s show will honor the 100th anniversary of water ski! The evening will wrap up with a fireworks show over Lake Silver.
