R-23-50 State of Local Emergency – Tropical Storm Idalia

In preparation for Tropical Storm Idalia (forecasted to strengthen into a hurricane by Wednesday), the City of Winter Haven will open a self-serve sandbag station Monday (8/28) and Tuesday (8/29) for Winter Haven residents at Lake Maude Recreation Park.
The sandbag location will be open until 2:00p.m. today as long as weather condition permit the safe operation of the site.
There is a limit of 10 sandbags per household. Closing time will be at 2:00 p.m. today. Residents will need to bring their own shovels for sand.
SCHOOL’S OUT CAMP
Our excellent camp staff are gearing up to care for Kindergarten through 8th Grade kids while school is closed later this week. The camp will be held at the Winter Haven Recreational and Cultural Center at 801 MLK Blvd. NE. Registration will happen on-site when you arrive. Please ensure students come with a water bottle, lunch and two snacks.

In the event you cannot visit our website or social media for updates, or if you simply prefer to listen to the most recent information, please call our Citizen Information Line at 863-508-3058. This provides a recorded message containing important up-to-date information for citizens. It will be updated as the storm progresses and will provide important information when recovery efforts begin after the storm.

The Winter Haven Public Safety Department’s free mobile phone app can be downloaded for apple or android phones by searching for Winter Haven Public Safety in the app store. This is a very valuable resource and allows you to receive vital messages immediately from our Public Safety team during the storm. You can also utilize the app to report non-emergency items to Police and Fire. We encourage you to download this and allow push notifications as another tool to receive important storm information.
Solid Waste Schedule
At this time, no changes are anticipated to Residential garbage or recycling routes. Please visit this page or watch social media for more information on brush, junk, and commercial routes as it’s announced.
Miscellaneous
If I am out-of-town and not able to return right away, can the police check on my home?
Optimally, you should have family or neighbors watch out for your home, but if this is not available Winter Haven Police can patrol by your home. Please call 863-401-2256.
