[ARCHIVED] Celebrating the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs’ 100th Anniversary

Celebrating the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs’ 100th Anniversary

The mission of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs is to promote the love of gardening, floral and landscape design, civic and environmental responsibility by providing education, resources and networking opportunities for our members, youth and the community.

On January 19, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. a tree planting celebration will be held honoring the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. As part of the Florida Arbor Day Celebration, FFGC requested that all Clubs and Circles in the state celebrate by planting a tree.

Trees will be planted at both the Winter Haven Garden Center and the adjacent Trail Head Park.

The following groups along with the City of Winter Haven’s Parks and Grounds department have taken an active role in the planning of this event:

Bouquet Garden Club:
President: Kitty Walker wa2LK@hotmail.com

Camellia Garden Club:
President: Cissy Richardson Suncit@msn.com

Gardenia Garden Club:
President: Donna Basgil Dbasgil@aol.com

Winter Haven Council of Garden Clubs:
President: Kim Short MSkimshort@gmail.com

The short program will be held prior to the ceremonial planting of the three trees. Pictures of the event will be taken and shared with the FFGC as part of the yearlong celebration.

Light refreshments will be served after the tree plantings.

The trees to be planted include: A lavender Crepe Myrtle tree will be planted in the Butterfly Garden at the Winter Haven Garden Center. The tree will enhance the beauty of the garden. Two Live Oak trees will be planted at the Trail Head Park. These trees will be replacing trees that had to be removed. They will grow to provide shade for those visiting this special park and provide shelter for wildlife.

Garden Club membership opportunity information:
If you share a love of plants, flowers, community and the environment, think about joining a garden club!

As  our lives change and we can no longer work in our yards tending to our flowers, vegetables, etc., gardening can be continued with house plants such as orchids, violets bromeliads, cactus or herbs. We can reach into community project orc simple learn about nature and our environment. If this interest you, contact C. Richardson, suncit@msn.com for details on joining a club geared to the “in change of life” gardening adventure.
