About Our Swim Lesson Program

The City of Winter Haven offers a variety of swim lessons through the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program.

All classes are held between the months of May and August, and are taught by American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors.

Class Levels Offered:

  • PARENT & CHILD

Ages 6 months to 2 years old

The purpose of Parent and Child swim lessons is to teach safe behaviors in, on, and around the water, and to develop swimming readiness.

Parents and children engage in water exploration activities with the objective of having fun and becoming comfortable with the water

  • PRESCHOOL

Ages 3 to 5 years old

Preschool Lessons aim to promote the developmentally appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills by young children.

  • LEARN TO SWIM

This level is aimed for participants who need basic beginner lessons. The level helps students feel comfortable in the water.

Skills such as floating, swimming on front and back, and submerging face/head are done with assistance from the instructor.

This level gives students independent success with fundamental skills.

Level 2 students are starting to be comfortable in the water and will perform some skills independently.

Students entering Level 2 can fully submerge their face, float with very little assistance, and are ready to learn more independently.

Level 3 - Stroke Development

This level builds on skills from Level 2 & develops strokes through additional guided practice.

Students entering Level 3 are able to swim front crawl for 15 yards, can submerge underwater comfortably, and are independent in the water.

Level 4 - Stroke Improvement

This level develops confidence and strength to improve skills learned and introduces new aquatic skills.

Students entering Level 4 are able to swim front crawl for 25 yards (one length of the pool), swim underwater, tread water, and float comfortably.

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement

This level gives students the opportunity to refine all six swimming strokes and practice swimming for longer distances.

Each class is loaded with engaging and challenging activities and drills to build endurance and improve technique.
